Canadian diocese to release list of priests found guilty of sex abuse

CNA Staff, Mar 18, 2021 / 09:51 pm (CNA).- The Canadian diocese of Saskatoon has promised to release a list of priests and Church officials found guilty of sexual abuse since 1933.

Brenda Fitzgerald, who heads the diocese’s Safeguarding Advisory Committee, said the diocese will publish a report detailing priests who were convicted in court or were found guilty in an internal investigative process. The report will also discuss the people who knew about the abuse and how it was handled.

“There is no doubt it is going to evaluate if past historical decisions were appropriate. And actually, by reviewing that, what can we learn for future situations?” she told CBC News.

Spain passes euthanasia, assisted suicide law

Madrid, Spain, Mar 18, 2021 / 08:01 pm (CNA).- Spain’s legislature passed a law Thursday to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide. Catholic leaders have decried the measure as “a defeat for all”, which abandons those who suffer.

The Congress of Deputies, the lower house of Spain’s legislative body, approved the law March 18 by a vote of 202 in favor, 141 against, and two abstentions. All that remains for the law to go into effect is its promulgation in the Official Bulletin of the State; it is expected to take effect in June.

Patients who can request euthanasia must be adult Spanish nationals or legal residents who suffer from “a serious and incurable disease or a serious, chronic and incapacitating condition.”

The congresswoman who was almost aborted

Washington D.C., Mar 18, 2021 / 07:00 pm (CNA).- The youngest Republican female member of Congress says her mother’s courageous decision to choose life is a narrative the pro-life movement needs more of.

“The thing that we struggle with,” said Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) in an interview with EWTN Pro-Life Weekly that will air on Thursday evening, “is personal stories, and the storytelling aspect. People learn so much more through a story.”

Cammack is one of 18 new female House members who identify as pro-life. Before serving in Congress as deputy chief of staff to former congressman Ted Yoho, she was a small business owner and graduate of the U.S. Naval War College.
