As well as being the feast of the Transfiguration, this day also has the sombre anniversary of the first of two – and so far only, praise God – uses of nuclear weaponry in war: On August 6th, 1945, ‘the bomb’, as it was and has been called, was dropped on Hiroshima, and three days later, another was detonated over Nagasaki, leading to the unconditional surrender of Japan, closing off the Pacific theatre of the Second World War (Germany had been defeated earlier, in April, with Hitler’s suicide).
