Pope Francis on July 9, 2018, offered his solidarity with and prayers for the victims of what are being called the worst floods in 35 years in western Japan. As of late afternoon on the 9th (local time) Japan News reported that the death toll was at 126, with more than 11,000 in shelters. Although rains have abated, danger from mudslides continues.
The Pope’s concerns came in a telegram to local ecclesial authorities from Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
