Blog Day, part the tenth: television revisited revisited.

How many of you have seent hat commercial with Sarah Michelle Geller narrating, which begins with the words (from memory): “Who can understand the life of a woman in a third world country, except for all women, everywhere?”Really? The hubris and arrogance of this statement is just so stunning, I have trouble wrapping my head around it.They actually think they can relate to the life of women in the third world simply by virtue of being a woman?

A Modest Proposal

Readers may have become wearied of that Catholic blogosphere cliche: the concern over male modesty and the oversexualization of male fashion in the world today.

The Crimes of Kermit Gosnell — Unclean Instruments

The Crimes of Kermit Gosnell — Unclean Instruments From The Grand Jury Report: Gosnell used and reused unsanitary instruments to perform abortions. The instruments that were inserted in to women’s bodies were also unsanitary, according to the workers

Margaret Thatcher "not a proper woman": British MP Glenda Jackson

That kind of comment epitomizes why I loathe feminism.Women who defy feminist dogmas are marginalized, ignored, or– if that’s impossible– re-classified as “non-women”.

Have we entered an age of a new gnosticism?

There is an adage: Qui bene distinguit, bene docet, that is, someone who makes distinctions well, teaches well.Distinguished canonist Ed Peters makes good distinctions about the Holy Father’s disregard for the Church’s duly promulgated law when he chose to wash the feet of women on Holy Thursday.  My emphases and comments.Retrospectives on the Mandatum rite controversiesMarch 29, 2013 It’s a very big Church and there are many issues competing for the pope’s attention

I am rather excited about tomorrow although now I am wondering if opening the blog to a day (a whole day!) of masculine commentary is a good idea.

The Limitations of Listening

I was watching Marcus Grodi’s interview with Msgr. Steenson, the Ordinary of the Ordinariate of the Chair of St Peter the other morning, and Msgr Steenson observed that in the  Episcopal Church things went down the drain because whenever there was a controversial issue the leadership of the church urges everyone to “listen” to the experiences of those who were unhappy.

Patron Saints of Pregnancy and Childbirth

One piece of advice I’ve seen in several prenatal books is to have something to focus on (besides the pain!) during labour. For Sunshine’s birth, I had a small photo album of random pictures that didn’t fit into any of my other photo albums; I was actually surprised at how flipping through those pictures, and reliving some of the happy memories, did help me face the pain.

She was raped and regrets her abortion

Because of course, abortion is the only answer: She says the abortion nearly ruined her life, sending her into a spiral of drinking and depression as she came to terms with the fact that “I killed my child, my own flesh and blood.”“For years, it plagued me that no one I told, told me not to [have the abortion],” said Sigrest. “There was no one to tell me I was strong enough, no one there to really support me.” The testimony of women like these is powerful, and I hope more come forward.
