Australian Doctor Under Fire for Refusing Sex-Selection Abortion

Way to go pro-choice: The Sunday Herald Sun yesterday revealed the couple had asked Dr Hobart to refer them to an abortion clinic after discovering at 19 weeks they were having a girl when they wanted a boy.Victoria’s Abortion Law Reform Act 2008 specifies the obligations of registered health practitioners who have a “conscientious objection” to abortion.Under the Act, if a woman requests a doctor to advise on a proposed abortion and the practitioner has a conscientious objection, he or she must refer the woman to a practitioner who does not conscientiously object. See, refusing to kill a girl fetus is WAY more sexist than killing the girl fetus.#FeministLogic

To preach or not to preach?

Thumbnail

I was rather taken by this headline, “Unemployed Sicilian man ‘murdered his parish priest because he couldn’t bear to listen to any more sermons”. I am one of those priests who preach a short sermon every day, and I suppose preach a little too long on a Sunday

Unusual Liturgy, Unusual Media, Unusual Holy Week

Thumbnail

My piece over at First Things this week, recounts the unusual, and ultimately rather empty-feeling Palm Sunday liturgy I experienced last weekend:It struck me as odd that the same people who say they wish to “build up the community of the People of God,” and who often decry what they see as “limitations” to the role of the laity, completely omitted any interaction between themselves and the people in the pews.

Lenten Retreat

On Palm Sunday morning I will quickly check my emails before I go to church, perhaps put up one post on Facebook, and then I will turn off my computer and put it away.

We had a Solemn High Mass on Laetare Sunday (something of a tradition at Blackfen!) but I only just realised that I hadn’t put up my photos on Flickr. That oversight has now been corrected

Annual Diocesan Seder Meal – Palm Sunday

Diocesan Programs Annual Diocesan Seder Meal – Palm Sunday Dear Priests, Parish Administrators, Religious working in Native Ministry, Teachers and Youth Ministry Leaders:Bishop Albert Thevenot is inviting all the “youth” of the Diocese (ages 13 – 25) to come together on the occasion of the Diocesan celebration of World Youth Day, Palm Sunday, March 24, 2013. We will not be celebrating Eucharist at the Seder, but it is expected to be celebrated at your own parish before attending.Although World Youth Day is more commonly known for its pilgrimage internationally every 3 years (or so), it is actually celebrated annually on feast of Palm Sunday around the globe
