Vatican City, 17 May 2013 (VIS) – Yesterday, Thursday 16 May, in the Domus Sanctae Marthae chapel, there was a meeting on new religious movements organized by the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue that, together with the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and the Pontifical Councils for Promoting Christian Unity and for Culture, have been studying these phenomena for some time. In 1986, for the first time, a brief provisional report was published entitled: “The Phenomenon of Sects and the New Religious Movements: Pastoral Challenge”, the result of a questionnaire sent out to the Episcopal Conferences two years prior

They expressed awareness of their responsibility before God to uphold high moral values ​​for the sake of future generations, which determines the appropriate public stance in the dialogue with the authorities and citizens.On his part, Štefan Füle expressed his deep respect for the spiritual and moral principles that the leaders of churches and religious organizations represent and embody in Ukraine

2013-03-06 Vatican Radio Archbishop Silvano Tomasi on Wednesday urged political leaders to safeguard the right of individuals and of communities to religious freedom.In a statement released in Geneva at the 22nd Session of the Human Rights Council on the Report of the Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, Archbishop Tomasi who is the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations and Other International Organizations said that “While the State should enforce the universality of human rights by balancing freedom and equality, it often identifies itself with the “dominant community” in a way that unfortunately relegates minorities to a second class status”.Please find the full text of Archbishop Tomasi’s statement below.Mr. President,Religious freedom is also a duty, a responsibility to be fulfilled both by individuals and religious groups
