Could Younger Confirmation Ages Ruin Religious Education?

Thumbnail

Confirmation should not be just a check in the box!Middle school is the worst time to confirm kids. They’re hormonal, disagreeable, argumentative. They’re also trying to figure out their own place in the world and transitioning from blindly accepting the faith of their parents to understanding what they themselves truly believe.Which often means they’re unsure of what they believe and their faith is shaky. But is teenage Confirmation propping up the current religious education system? And, if it wasn’t there, would childhood religious education collapse?Confirmation: the carrot on the stickConfirmation is the proverbial carrot on the religious education stick that draws kids and parents through the system

Consumers of our Neighbourhood

During our first year of marriage, my husband and I lived in the ground floor apartment of a big, old, red-brick house. On either side of us were similar houses split into apartments, and across the street was a high-rise building.

Vatican City, 14 June 2013 (VIS) – Dialogue, discernment, and frontier: These were the three words that the Pope suggested to the personnel of the Jesuit journal La Civilta Cattolica (Catholic Civilization), which is published in Italian from Rome, whom he received in audience this morning. “Your fidelity to the Church still needs you to stand strong against the hypocrisies that result from a closed and sick heart

Christians face being driven from the Middle Eastby Simon KentThis could be the greatest story never told. The Arab Spring has turned to bitter mid-winter for Christians across the Middle East.Members of orthodox faiths are being driven from their biblical heartlands by hard line Muslim governments with no toleration of religious diversity. All behind the increasingly opaque veil of chaos and civil war as the rest of the world looks the other way.The exodus comes just 24-months into the biggest political upheaval in a generation, according to Father Peter-Michael Preble, an Orthodox priest with the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese in the Americas. He says Christians are the single most persecuted minority in countries including Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Algeria Iraq, Iran and the Lebanon. The Southbridge, Mass. priest points to the recent kidnapping of two prominent Orthodox bishops by rebel Syrian fighters as evidence of the bind Christians find themselves in.“Syriac Orthodox Archbishop Yohanna Ibrahim and Greek Orthodox Metropolitan Boulos Yaziji were both taken after they were tried to negotiate the release of two other Orthodox priests being held for ransom,” Preble told the Toronto Sun.“Sadly, they were also outspoken in highlighting the threat to religious tolerance from the conflict engulfing their country.

Modest is Not Hottest

Modest is Not Hottest Bad Catholic: I understand what’s supposed to be meant by the puppy-killer, I really do, that modesty attracts a member of the opposite sex to the fullness of the person, but “attraction to the fullness of the person” is not at all what is meant by “hottest.” We say it as if we were attempting, through modesty, to be objects of sexual arousal, not because we’ve thought it through, but because it rhymes and we were told it by our middle-school Bible camp counselor. It’s the same thing when Christian girls — God bless and keep them — say they cover themselves “to leave room for the imagination,” as if the point of modesty was that surrounding men imagine you naked.

Pope launches into spontaneous Q&A with students

2013-06-07 Vatican Radio (Vatican Radio) In a style that seems to have almost become signature of the current pontificate, Pope Francis stepped out of yet another scripted session to engage in a spontaneous question-and-answer period with hundreds of children and teens. The papal audience in the Paul VI Hall with students, teachers and staff of Jesuit grade schools and high schools on Friday became a friendly dialogue between the 76-year-old pontiff and the young people

South Carolina Stands For Religious Liberty

Thumbnail

This video of a high school kid tearing up his approved valedictorian speech and proclaiming his Christian faith instead–then defying the atheist bullies by reciting the Lord’s Prayer in public has gone viral.Proud to say that this took place not only here in upstate South Carolina within my parish. Liberty High School in Pickens is just down the road.I liked the kid’s one liner: “We celebrate freedom of religion–not freedom from religion.” This was a direct reference to the attacks the school community has been suffering from the aggressively atheist Freedom From Religion Foundation
