Apparently pleasure is associated with some brain activity involving these chemicals. What is more, when someone is addicted to something, say drugs, they get too much stimulation of their brain from drugs and they become uninterested in normal enjoyment

Five Minute Mass Reflection – The Holy Trinity (May 26, 2013)

Thumbnail

Image credit: Triquetra via  YCM.wikia.com (Creative Commons) The first reading for this Mass comes from Proverbs 8:22-31 (the wisdom of God was present at the moment of creation), the responsory is Psalm 8 (O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!), the second reading is Romans 5:1-5 (“we even boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope” – a hope we can trust because of the Spirit we’ve been given), and the Gospel is John 16:12-15 (the Spirit will teach us what the Father has to say). The full text of the readings is here, on the USCCB website. “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Any Catholic will recognize those words in the sign of the Cross, it is a prayer we pray often: at Mass, when we say grace, in school, and in our daily prayers

May is Time to Start Another Garden!

For my family, gardening has progressed from accidental tomato and papaya plants, to our beautiful bougainvilleas and mini rose bush in Playa del Carmen, to last year’s sunflowers here in Canada, and this year to a shared garden and a more complete house-side garden (instead of the usual flower gardens.)Our elderly neighbour, who can no longer plant her garden alone, as asked me to help her plant and care for her garden, and has offered us the share the vegetables.

Killing in the Name of God is Blasphemy

Comments from this morning’s mass at St. Martha House…“Doing good” is a principle that unites all humanity beyond the diversity of ideologies and religions…The root of this possibility of doing good – that we all have – is in creation

The Death that Leads to Life

The Living Rosary

Dear Theophilus,Over the past two weeks I’ve had the opportunity on a few different occasions to take part in a very unique experience: The Living Rosary. The premise of The Living Rosary is quite simple – each participant becomes a living bead of the Rosary. The levels on which The Living Rosary brings the participants closer to Christ are much more complex.Developed by a member of the Catholic Women’s League at St.

Newness in the Holy Spirit – Pope Francis

“Newness always makes us a bit fearful, because we feel more secure if we have everything under control, if we are the ones who build, programme, and plan our lives … This is also the case when it comes to God

By its very nature, ministry means encountering a lot of different people.  In the fifteen years that I’ve been privileged to work for the Church, I’ve been blessed to make many friends - some of whom have stood beside me on some of the best days of my life, and many who’ve been with me on my worst days.

It’s the May Two Four Weekend!

Or the end of it, anyway. We call this long weekend the May Two Four after the Canadians who head to the beer store and buy a two four to celebrate a weekend which is the start of something or other

Pentecost Sunday – Mass during the Day

Reading 1ACTS 2:1-11 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the skya noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spiritand began to speak in different tongues,as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heavenstaying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confusedbecause each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked,“Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his native language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia,Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene,as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tonguesof the mighty acts of God.” Responsorial PsalmPS 104:1, 24, 29-30, 31, 34 R. "A crisis of values that is extremely deep"

“It is quite important to recreate a mechanism where liquidity is separated from large scale financial gambling.” In other words, money must be issued debt-free (without interest) in the public interest (the common good) and its quantity transparently controlled.
