Five months isn’t an anniversary that’s commonly celebrated, but on November 27th it will have been exactly five months since I carried my belongings up two flights of stairs in our big, old rectory here in Owen Sound to begin my first ever assignment as an associate Pastor.St. Mary’s Owen SoundSince my first “new priest” post on this blog back in July (found HERE) I’ve celebrated weddings, funerals and baptisms, anointed the sick, and I’m continuing the process of trying to match the faces I see at Mass each Sunday with the names and personal stories that go with them.

Over the years I’ve found myself disenchanted with the tendency among Catholics to turn secular political debates into “Catholic” political debates. I use the scare quotes because political issues are often defined in ways that simply don’t fit well with a Catholic world view.
