New Abortion Caravan & 1Flesh.org
Being young couldn’t be more exciting or invigorating. I look around me and I see so much passion and willingness to make a CHANGE in this world, and it makes me so glad to be young. I’m not sure what other generations were like at this age, as I didn’t live in them. But something tells me that God, in His omniscient Wisdom, saw the depraved times we’d be living in and formed many of us with a distinct fire to fight for what we believe in. Of course, what some of us fight for isn’t always the Truth, but that controversy only inspires our activism, discussion and inner soul-searching. Young people of this generation are determined to uncover the truth they are seeking and let it be known.
This past week, I’ve come into contact with two promising movements that are primarily led by young people. The first, many of you are likely already familiar with: The New Abortion Caravan. Spearheaded by CCBR, this Caravan has been travelling across Canada with graphic images of the unborn children massacred by abortion. Their trucks display these images on a large scale as they drive city-to-city, stopping in major areas to stand on street corners with these images and engage in conversation with the public. They have a mission to “ENDtheKILLING” within 18 years by changing public opinion to recognize the personhood of the unborn and what abortion does to these unborn children. On Thursday, as they passed through Toronto, I had the incredible opportunity to stand with them at the corner of Dundas Square, holding the graphic signs and speaking with passers-by. Putting myself out there in this type of setting was a lot more nerve wracking than I had expected. Those doing this across Canada are so brave! The experience gave me so much appreciation for their team, if I didn’t already have enough admiration towards them! These people are truly changing hearts and minds across Canada – the testimonies are endless. Their philosophy of meeting Canada face to face with the truth about abortion is truly working and I have every confidence that if we each dedicate ourselves to showing and speaking the truth, even when its hard, we’ll see this horror of abortion become unthinkable in Canada and beyond.
The second movement is one that was launched only a few days ago, and I am SO excited to share it with you, if you’ve not yet been introduced. Led by a young Catholic blogger from Virginia, known as “BadCatholic” (whose blog you should also check out – so solid!), is a revolution called 1Flesh – “The Revolt Against Artificial Birth Control.” The young people behind this movement are responding to the Obamacare decision that enforces public funding of contraception – a decision that they say, “means the battle over artificial contraception is about to get real.” 1Flesh is an educational website full of well-researched and informative articles covering all the aspects of why artificial birth control is unhealthy, and takes away not only from the beauty, but the pleasure of the sexual act. One might initially expect such a website to be a turn-off to the average young person. But the brilliant young minds behind the website have written witty, winsome and well-educated articles discussing the topic, accompanied by clever graphics to go along with each topic. This is a website that young people don’t have to be embarrassed to send their friends too, as it speaks on a level that we can relate to, and it combats the issue from a standpoint where most young people are at. It’s also a place where we can educate ourselves on the issue and learn how to discuss it with our peers. (There’s a lot of research on this site that I was unaware of!) I cannot say enough good things about this movement, and I have a great feeling that it is going to reach many people as it continues to gain popularity. Pray for these young people as they promote their new website, and pray that all hearts are open to their powerful message. Read the original launch post here to get an idea of the mission behind the website. If you’re passionate about the issue, it’ll surely make your day.
Both these projects are tackling some of the hardest issues of our world today, especially among young people. So when you’re inclined to think that our world is “going to hell in a hand-basket,” remember these young people, and so many more who are giving their lives to saving lives and saving souls by spreading the Truth. Encourage young people who are “sitting on the fence” to get involved with groups like this. Respect young people for the gift they can be, despite our many careless faults and inclinations. We are not only the future leaders of our world, but in a very real way, we are the current leaders of our world today. I can’t wait to see what more God has in store for us as we continue to dedicate ourselves to Him and His plan for the salvation of the world.
