The Heart of Education

If somebody asked me what the heart of our educational plan is, my answer would be dictation. I have made several posts on how we homeschool and dictation as the foundational point, which are all in the link in orange in the header above titled “Homeschooling, Simplified.” There are several posts in that link, a couple of them deal directly with the how to of dictation and why, on a pragmatic level, it is such an efficient and efficacious method of teaching language and other stuff. But I would like to make the point here of how it is also formative.

I am making this recipe, if only for the name.

Rabarbrakake (Norwegian rhubarb cake) And if it’s tasty, I will rejoice, because: 1) I don’t particularly care for rhubarb, and never have (I think I suffered too much childhood trauma from Auntie A, who made rhubarb pie without an adequate amount of sugar.) 2) It grows in my garden. And how. (I did not plant it.) 3) I’m enough of an old-school mom (and raised by parents who lived through the Great Depression) that I cannot possibly NOT use the rhubarb from my garden, much less uproot the plant and kill it

Unusual Water Lily

“Nymphaea ‘Black Princess?”, drawing by Sarah “Sallie” Thayer, 2013[The reason for a question mark following the name is I am simply unsure about the identity] I read once just how many different varieties of Water Lilies there are — I can’t recall the numbers, but there were a huge number of them when all the “cultivars” were added in. So, it is no wonder that it is so difficult to confirm the identity of a particular plant — especially when I am not a trained botanist
