Mortimer J. Adler (1902-2001) was early in life an agnostic American philosopher of Jewish descent (he referred to himself as a pagan) who was received into the Catholic Church at the age of 96, two years before his death. Adler’s education was eclectic, having achieved a doctorate in psychology from Columbia University (where he taught for several years) and appointment to the philosophy department at the University of Chicago, where he also taught law courses.
