Nature as Teacher

The words of William Wordsworth’s poem, “The Tables Turned,” hardly seem to describe the ideal Catholic liberal arts education: “Up! up! my Friend, and quit your books; Or surely you’ll grow double: Up! up! my Friend, and clear your looks; Why all this toil and trouble?” And again: “Books! ’tis a dull and endless strife.” While Wordsworth would seem to be encouraging laziness in study, he is, in fact, doing something quite different: he is arguing for the merit of immersing ourselves in the natural world so that we can be taught by the beauty of creation surrounding us, because
