As the Vatican gathered 11 Nobel peace laureates, plus NATO officials, ambassadors and peace activists to discuss nuclear disarmament at a Nov. 10-11 summit, there was no doubt about the Church’s position.

Even before the first atomic bomb was detonated during the Second World War, every pope since Pius XII has decried the awesome destructive power of nuclear weapons. The escalation of the Cold War prompted Pope John XXIII to demand an end to the arms race in his 1963 encyclical Pacem in Terris,. Pope Francis cheered on, signed and ratified the Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty in September as U.S. President
