Gendron elected president of Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops

Bishop Lionel Gendron of Saint-Jean-Longueuil has been elected president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), succeeding Bishop Douglas Crosby of Hamilton.

Archbishop Richard Gagnon of Winnipeg was elected vice president. The announcement came Sept. 27 during the third day of the plenary assembly of the CCCB at Cornwall, Ont.
Gendron, 73, who will serve a two-year term, is a native Saint-Quentin, N.B., and was ordained in 1969. He joined the Sulpicians and was elected Superior of their Canadian province in 1994.
