Today, Catholics around the world celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. This day commemorates the end of Mary’s earthly life, and her assumption into Heaven, body and soul.
The belief in the Assumption of Mary was a widely-held tradition, and a frequent meditation in the writings of saints and the subject of art throughout the centuries. However, it wasn’t until 1950, when Pope Pius XII made an infallible, ex-cathedra statement in the Apostolic Constitution that officially defined the dogma of the Assumption.
