Catherine and Mary-Carla MacDonald will be offering their presentation “Helen ‘Miss Nelly’ MacDonald of Glenaladale” which is based on the research and writings of their mother, the late Genevieve MacDonald. Catherine and Mary-Carla are completing the editing of the book Genevieve had researched and prepared on “Miss Nelly”. Helen MacDonald’s story is fascinating. “Miss Nelly” arrived from Scotland on St. John’s Island (now Prince Edward Island) with her family in 1772 as part of the Glenaladale immigration. It was not long before she found herself managing the then 20,000-acre Glenaladale estate when her brothers John and Donald left to serve in the American Revolutionary War. She managed Glenaladale Estate for nearly 20 years. As a woman doing what was then considered men’s work and a job for which she had no preparation, she was an extraordinary pioneer and deserves to have her story not only told but recorded. Their presentation will be held on Monday, August 14th at 7:30 pm at the Tracadie Community Centre on Station Road in Tracadie Cross. Some of Miss Nelly’s artifacts will be on display. Thanks to the support from Tracadie Community Hall, this presentation is free. There will be light refreshments and a few snacks.
