Record year for Aid to the Church in Need
Aid to the Church in Need set new fundraising records in Canada and internationally in 2016.
The Montreal office of the international pontifical charity brought in $2.9 million last year. That’s 1.5 per cent of the record $189.5 million Aid to the Church in Need raised world-wide, a jump of $13.5 million over last year.
Out of 148 countries where Aid to the Church in Need funds are spent, the biggest recipient was Iraq, where $14.3 million went to support Church institutions struggling through the country’s war with the so-called Islamic State.
In Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Eastern Europe, Aid to the Church in Need helped fund 1,222 construction projects to build or repair churches and chapels.
