Report Card: Commencement speakers who inspire; media bias on Pence at Notre Dame
CUA President Garvey urges commencement speakers who inspire
John Garvey, president of The Catholic University of America, urged Catholic colleges to feature speakers who have not taken public positions at odds with the Church’s teaching. But he added that their responsibilities don’t end there, but that Catholic colleges should honor those who act as examples to graduates on how to live.
“Universities shouldn’t cause scandal by honoring or giving public signals of agreement with people who promote grave injustice,” he said. “But I wish we would view our annual commencement exercises as something more than an opportunity to avoid causing scandal.”
