Anti-Catholic “Blaine Amendment” challenged in Missouri
The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments on — of all things — state funding of playground resurfacing, in which Missouri argued its fund for that purpose can’t be used for a church school. The basis of the Show-Me State’s case was a 19th-century anti-Catholic law that prohibits any funding for religious schools. Across political lines, the Justices were deeply skeptical.
