Some pretty churches

Thumbnail

I got the idea for this post, and perhaps a few others like it, from a trip I took with my mother a few months back. I took her to Montreal, because she had mentioned in passing that she had always wanted to see La Basilique de Notre Dame, but had never been able to, sigh, and now it looked like she would never get to see it, etc etc.

“We will not be welcomed by the likes of YOU!” – UPDATED

Thumbnail

For crying out loud, Democrats? How insecure are you?If you’re secure enough in what you believe — if you’re certain that you have a premium on the truth — then what’s so threatening about these welcome baskets that you can’t accept them with a little good grace, say “thank you” and then enjoy the pralines and throw the literature away, if you don’t like it?This reminds me of that silly female professor who had to leave a talk by Larry Summers because the poor shrinking violet could not bear to hear that men might be different from women and got a case of the public vapors over it.When you are secure in what you believe, you’re not threatened by someone handing you a praline and a prayer card.

Homosexuals recruit volunteers nationally to go to Minnesota as protesters

Homosexuals recruit volunteers nationally to go to Minnesota as protestersPosted on6 September 2012byFr. John ZuhlsdorfMinnesota is ground-zero for defense of true marriage this year.I predicted that as election day in November 2012 drew nearer, the battle over the defense-of-marriage amendment in Minnesota would get as weird as the legislative battle last year in Madison, WI

St. Teresa of Avila and New Media

Thumbnail

In the mail today comes a paperback copy of Father James Martin’s book, Between Heaven and Mirth, and since I liked it so well when I read it the first time, I flipped through it again over lunch, and re-discovered this quote from St. Teresa of Avila:“From silly devotions and sour-faced saints, good Lord, deliver us.”Ah, I thought.

EU Bishops: Social policy can not be subject to profit

Thumbnail

2012-09-06 Vatican Radio (Vatican Radio) Europe’s bishops are calling on EU leaders to stop subjecting social policy to criteria of economic profitability. In a statement released at the end of a three day summit in Cyprus, theCouncil of the Episcopal Conferences of Europe (CCEE) bishops responsible for social issues note an increasing social exclusion with a significant lack of adequate social protection for people worst hit by the crisis. The bishops confirmed the conviction that Europe needs Christianity and that Christians have a special responsibility for the future of Europe.Below the full text of their concluding statement: The concerns of the European bishops:The European crisis is not just economic but first of all anthropological At the root of the current crisis situation which the European continent is experiencing lie not only the serious problems connected with the economic-financial systems, but above all the lack of an anthropological and social vision focused on solidarity and subsidiarity.

The Tuscany Prize for Catholic Fiction

Last week at the Catholic New Media Conference I had the pleasure of meeting Peter Mongeau and Christopher Samuels, who together have started a promising new project called Tuscany Press. Both are not only bibliophiles but also former businessmen, having worked for companies like Solomon Brothers and McKinsey, and they bring that expertise to the table with their new venture.

Become a living letter

This morning some words came to me that bear an unfortunate resemblance to the National Rifle Association’s old slogan, but the message is about life, not death:Books don’t help people. People help people.I have that on my mind because people often ask me for advice on how they might give a friend or relative a copy of my book My Peace I Give You: Healing Sexual Wounds with the Help of the Saints without the recipient taking offense.

The Institute for Catholic Culture

Thumbnail

Our good friend and past contributor, David Clayton, has another terrific essay up at his blog, The Way of Beauty. Today he’s discussing The Institute of Catholic Culture, an organization in Virginia dedicated to catechesis through “offering education programs structured upon the classical liberal arts and by offering opportunities in which authentic Catholic culture is experienced and lived.”We also have to ask ourselves, in my opinion, why educate
