Echt, August 2, 1942 – Sr. Benedicta is arrested with her sister Her last letter: "Send me the next volume of the Breviary"

The new wave of persecution had been the swift response of the occupying forces to the public reading of the Pastoral Letter of the Dutch Episcopate (see previous post)

MEMORIES

My Grandchildren call me ‘Papere’ – I mention this so you can follow the conversation: “Papere how old will you be on your birthday?” “68” “You are older than Papa.” “Yep, just like he is older than you.” “Will you die?” “Someday – but I have asked Jesus not to come for me before you and your brothers are teenagers so it will be easier for you.” “That’s nice, but you might die tonight!” I chuckled inside and reassured her I was not planning on that and she immediately switched to telling me her stuffed toy Piglet was wearing out and how she needed a new one!

Who has the right to decide when to withdraw medical treatment.

Thumbnail

Today, there are two court decisions from two countries both dealing with a similar question, that being, who has the right to decide when to withdraw medical treatment. The first case, decided by the Consent and Capacity board in Ontario, concerns a 90 year-old man, referred to as GS, who is a survivor of the Nazi Holocaust, was a victim of a car accident and has been in coma for the past 20 months. An Ottawa hospital was given the right, against the wishes of the family, to withhold aggressive measures, but the hospital did agree to continue life-sustaining measures until he died a natural death.
