Two Compositions by Normand Gouin

Thumbnail

Norm Gouin is the Music Director at Old St. Joseph’s Church, a thriving parish in Old City, Philadelphia, where, in an alley hidden from conspicuous view, Catholics first cautiously put down roots amidst a less-than-welcoming atmosphere.I would like to discuss two of Gouin’s pieces, which were commissioned by Dr.

COLUMN: Agar – When government doesn’t trust the people

Thumbnail

No confidence in the peopleby Jerry AgarThe Ontario government’s double standard and disdain for ordinary people and businesses were on ugly display recently.Sixty per cent of Ontarians, according to Angus Reid polling, want beer and wine available in convenience stores. But the petition presented at Queen’s Park last week was shot down before it landed on the table.

Hell and al-Qaida descend on Syriaby Tarek FatahWho would have thought a Canadian mother of two would leave her children behind and join the international jihad unfolding in Syria?Meet Thwaiba Kanafani. She left the comforts of her apartment in downtown Toronto, soon to appear in a YouTube video dressed in camouflaged battle gear, holding an automatic assault rifle, to declare: “I came from Canada to answer the call of my homeland” as the men surrounding her chanted “Allah O Akbar.”Kanafani is not alone.

Olympics #3: 100,000 Condoms

Thumbnail

I must say I rather enjoyed the Olympic opening ceremony, especially the egalitarian lighting of the “cauldron”, it was good to see Cameron’s big society given visual form and it was wonderful to see how billions of pounds could be spent in such a short time, though I guiltily wonder just how many NHS hip ops that was or whether the money could have been spent on mosquito nets in the third world – but that is the Judas question, so we shouldn’t go there. I hadn’t realise that the industrial revolution changed us from Hobbits to Orks but others have said that but it was a useful metaphor to use on Life Sunday.I don’t know when the “show” bit started to become so important and preceded the march of the future the worlds PE teachers but what I can’t get my head around is why, apparently 100,000 condoms were distributed to the competitors

Why do people support assisted suicide?

Thumbnail

A recent Angus Reid poll found that 80% of Canadians support legalizing assisted suicide. My first response is related to the way the poll was done. This is an online poll that leads the respondents by providing information related the recent court decision in BC, the recent push for the British Medical Association (BMA) to take a “neutral” stand on assisted suicide (the BMA voted to continue opposing assisted suicide) and they stated that assisted suicide was legal in Montana, Oregon and Washington states

Pope Benedict keeps in the tough bits from St Alphonsus

In the ordinary form calendar, today is the feast of St Alphonsus Liguori. (It is celebrated tomorrow in the older form.) The Holy Father devoted his catechesis at the general audience today, to the teaching of St Alphonsus on prayer, particularly on prayer as necessary for salvation.
