New Wine Skin

Thumbnail

Mother of God, pray for us

The new skin wherein the new wine fermented,
the newest of the Covenant promises.
Mary the Immaculate,
The God chosen skin, the choicest, purest
to contain the New and Eternal drink
which alone satisfies arid humanity.
She that contained the morning dew
our Redemption promise.

The young flexible skin that moved
according to the will of the intoxication she held.
This is wineskin that alone can contain the Universe’s drink.
This is the Spirit filled skin from which no wine is lost,
the handmaid that swells to contain the measure of He who she bore.
This, the ewe white from the washing, pregnant with the Lamb.
This, that contained Canaan’s sweet abundance.

This the singular vessel!

This morning was one of those happy days in which the reading of the week day at Mass accidentally gave new meaning to the Saturday Memoria of Our Lady – yes I know mad people write poems that don’t scan!

Lectionary Hymns

A few years ago I had an idea for writing “the hymn of the day” that began, not with the Gospel, but with a Psalm. Since the Psalm is already a sung form, and the preeminent model for all Church singing, I make use of it as the form and structure of the whole.

Rarely was I able to include the second reading, but in this Sunday’s example, it was not only possible but natural to bring it in, in a summary way, as the second line of the fifth verse.

I lift my eyes to You, O Lord,

Until You speak Your promised word;

Mine like the eyes of maids who stand

Until the mistress waves her hand.

So shall I wait upon your will,
Commands that seem of good or ill.

For even harshest words from You

Shall still prove holy, kind and true.

So Jesus listened and obeyed
When in His human will afraid.
Despised, rejected, sought and killed —
He yet attended to Your will.

So may this Church which You have wrought,
And with Your own blood dearly bought,
Delight to ponder and obey
The hard or gentle words You say.

Have mercy, Lord, have mercy long,

Our very weakness render strong,

Until the earth, like heav’n is filled

With sweet concordance to Your will.

Persecuted Iraqi Christians Arriving in Ottawa

St. Patrick’s Basilica in Ottawa has sponsored an Iraqi Christian family that was facing severe persecution in Baghdad. With the help of the Government of Canada, the family will be arriving in Ottawa later this month.

The parish has already raised funds to support the family as they start their new life. But they could use a few volunteers who will help the family integrate into Canadian society. The family is composed of a husband and wife, along with three children under the age of 10.

If you’d like to learn more about volunteering, there will be a meeting this Monday, July 9, at 7 pm in the basement of St. Patrick’s (corner of Kent and Nepean). You can also call the parish office at 613-233-1125

The night before Colloquium 2012 opened I wound my way to the Madeleine and happened upon the scene in the video included here. Buona fortuna, is that how one says it?
Our colleague Todd Flowerday has been examining the letter by Bl. John Paul II on the centenary anniversary of the 1903 MP “Tra le sollecetudini” of St. Pius X at his blog, CATHOLIC SENSIBILITY. He reflects upon that document in light of some musings about noisy children at Mass:

I was struck by this this thread (about noisy children) at PrayTell where I mused that children are expected to be mini-adults. Paul Inwood in turn commented that, “We forget that Jesus asked us to become like little children, not to make little children become like us.”

So sure: let’s keep dignity on the table. But let’s make sure we are talking about the dignity of the Lord Jesus, who welcomed children, and who, on the night before he died, set aside outer cloak and offended the dignity of Peter who protested that some things just do not belong.

I offer this video, with permission of the parties depicted as a testament to both the purity of the truth our Lord spoke when reminding us of the dignity of childhood in the Kingdom, and to the majesty and glory of what our children can teach us about how we go about our duties in sacred music.
