Catholic board doesn’t support Gay-Straight Alliance name

Gay-Straight Alliance.

Is it just a convenient name for a club tackling the bullying of gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered students in publicly funded schools?

Or, as Ontario Catholic school boards argue, is it a politically organized, American-based theology that would teach adult lifestyle practices in direct opposition to Catholic beliefs?

The long simmering controversy peaked Friday when Education Minister Laurel Broten introduced an amendment to her government’s anti-bullying bill that would strip school officials of their power to veto the club name Gay-Straight Alliance.

The planned amendment met with a strong rebuke from Ontario Catholics. (more…)
