Bishop Collie clear on how schools will meet anti-bullying legislation and stay true to testaments
With the passage of anti-bullying legislation today, requiring Ontario’s Catholic schools to support “Gay-Straight Alliances” upon students’ request, Northwestern Ontario’s Catholic Bishop declared there would be a “Catholic component” to those clubs.
Fred Collie, the Bishop of the Thunder Bay Diocese, expressed support for any anti-bullying legislation but shared the skepticism of those who spoke out against Bill 13, arguing the club name ought not to be written in stone.
Collie pledged to work with the region’s five Catholic board directors to ensure “qualified adults” can supply “good support” to students, recognizing the sensitivity of the topic to the religion. (more…)
