Welcome back Occupy

MAY DAY TORONTODo you remember the Occupy movement last year?

Do you remember the smells, the strange demands and of course the assaults and the rapes? Those will be forgotten by most of the media as Occupy resurfaces today. Heck, most media outlets refused to cover the rapes and assaults to begin with.

Regardless Occupy is back as of today on “International Workers Day.” No surprise there, the goal of Occupy is and always has been international socialism and May 1st is an important day for the socialist movement.

I call these people socialists because I listen to what they say to each other, what they demand. I expect most media outlets will just continue to call them “protesters” and “activists.”

Over at Adbusters, one of the inspirations for the movement, they are calling for a general strike today and have a live stream set up to capture the sights and sounds of their march on Wall Street. They also have this posted.

Hey you dreamers, strikers and new left redeemers out there,

For thirty-one magical days beginning this Tuesday, May 1, we take the plunge and Strike! We block the Golden Gate Bridge; occupy a Manhattan-bound tunnel; seize the ports. In 115 cities, we march into banks, erect tents and refuse to leave. We disrupt financial institutions forcing thousands to preemptively close. Five thousand of us pray, dance, sleep on Wall Street and in front of the Fed and if the Bloombergs of the world bring out paramilitary police to intimidate us, we use our social media fire to call out 50,000 more occupiers and intimidate them right back.

At the official Occupy Wall Street website they are calling for an international general strike as well and have linked themselves to the Quebec tuition protests.

In Ottawa they are planning, among other things, a march on the Prime Minister’s office for noon. In Toronto a march is scheduled at 4pm and of course a general strike all day – “No Work No School No Shopping No Banking No Housework.” Occupy Vancouver will also mark May Day in some fashion which will apparently start by flogging themselves for being racist simply for existing on Canada’s left coast.

I’ve been saying since Occupy left last fall that they would be back in the spring. Some have argued with me that this was a spent force but those that did that assumed that Occupy was a grassroots movement that had fizzled. It isn’t.

This is a movement that has the backing of big labour, of many in the education establishment at the college and university level and even among many in the political elite (see Obama, Barack and Gore, Al).

Occupy is back today and with it, the attempt by the consensus media to portray these folks as average citizens outraged by some fault of capitalism instead of saying what they really are – socialists that want to overthrow the system.
