Another Church Website, with some thoughts

While scouting through doicee websites and looking for churches that look interesting, or have good websites, I found this website for the

church of St Joseph

in the town of Douro, in the diocese of Peterborough. The site is quite good, and has a parish history along with a pictoral documentary of the church showing many photos of the interior of the church. The interior looks nice, particularly the stained glass windows.

The pope has encouraged priests to use the internet to spread the word, and church websites would be an important part of that evangelization, but many, if not most churches have none, or have a poor one. I could point out bad ones, and never want for material, and while it is fun to point out flaws and shortcomings, I don’t think it does much good in many cases, either for our target or for ourselves. And besides, I would hate to be an overworked and underappreciated priest and read some yahoo with a keyboard writing about how bad my website is. It is better to point out the good, congatulate those who did well, and encourage others to follow in their footsteps.

Queen of the Franciscan Order Pray for Us!

We participated in a procession in honour of Our Lady of Fatima, on Monday. Any procession of this kind can be moving, but what is most moving is to participate in a candelight procession at the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes. The grand scale of such a procession is demonstrated in this Youtube link. Our Lady is the Queen of the Franciscan Order, let us ask for her intercession in this month of Mary for vocations to our order.

Our Lady, Queen of the Franciscan Order, pray for us!

Professor: 1,000 years until Japan has no more children

An economics professor develops an online clock that allows people to watch Japan’s population fading into history.

A screen capture of Prof. Yoshida’s clock.

SENDAI, JAPAN, May 18, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) – Twenty years ago, Japan seemed poised to displace the United States as the world’s economic superpower. Now, it is fast approaching a nation with no future – one that an economics professor estimates will have no children under the age of 15 in 1,000 years.

“Japan’s fertility is lowest among developed countries,” Professor Hiroshi Yoshida told LifeSiteNews.com.

Professor Yoshida, who teaches the Economics of Aging at the Graduate School of Economics and Management in Tohoku University in Sendai, has developed an online clock that counts down the number of children under the age of 15 remaining in the island nation.

It shows there are 280,000 fewer children in Japan in this year than in 2011.

If these trends continue, that means in 364,875 days, there will be no children left.

(Click “like” if you want to end abortion! )

The Japanese birthrate now stands somewhere between 1.1 and 1.3 children per couple, about half the level required for replacement. As a result, each year its population contracts and ages. The United Nations estimates each day there are 30 fewer Japanese people than the day before.

The Japanese have coined a term to refer to themselves: “shoshika,” that is, “a society without children.”

By 2050, Japan’s population will contract by 25 percent.

Professor Yoshida’s online counter is unique in that it focuses on the children rather than total population.

The famously insular nation’s fertility drop comes from an aging population that marries later and has progressively fewer children.

Japan also suffers an estimated 250,000 abortions a year but continues to approve new forms of birth control and abortion including NorLevo, an abortifacient that works up to 72 hours after intercourse.

Economist magazine has stated, if the nation’s demographic implosion continues, “the two ‘lost decades’ of economic stagnation in Japan since 1990 may turn out not to be an aberration.”

The clock can be seen here.

NOVENA TO THE HOLY GHOST

This Novena should begin on May 18th and continue for the next nine days.

The first novena was prayed by the Apostles, the Blessed Virgin Mary,
and the small company of those who had been with the Lord Jesus. After
His ascension, they “devoted themselves to prayer,” until the coming of
the Holy Ghost.

In the Name of the Father, + and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Each day, the Novena begins with this prayer:

O HOLY SPIRIT, our Lord and our God, we adore thee and humbly
acknowledge here in thy sacred presence that we are nothing, and can do
nothing, without thy operation within us. Come, great Paraclete, thou
Father of the poor, thou Comforter of the blest, fulfill the promise of
our Saviour, who would not leave us orphans, and enter our minds and
hearts as thou didst descend on the day of Pentecost upon the Holy
Mother of Jesus and upon His first disciples. Grant that we may have a
part in those gifts which thou didst so graciously bestow upon them.

Take from our hearts all that is not pleasing to thee and make of them a
worthy dwelling-place for Jesus. Illumine our minds, that we may see
and understand the things that are for our eternal welfare. Inflame our
hearts with the pure love of the Father, that, cleansed from attachments
to all unworthy objects, our lives may be hidden with Jesus in God.
Strengthen our wills, that they may be conformed to the will of our
Creator and guided by thy holy inspirations. Aid us to practice the
heavenly virtues of humility, poverty, and obedience which are taught to
us in the earthly life of Jesus.

Descend upon us, O mighty Spirit, that, inspired and encouraged by thee,
we may faithfully fulfill the duties of our various states in life,
carry our particular crosses with patience and courage, and accomplish
the Father’s will for us more perfectly. Make us, day by day, more holy
and give to us that heavenly peace which the world cannot give.

O Holy Spirit, thou Giver of every good and perfect gift, grant to us
our special intentions of this novena of prayer. May the Father’s will
be done in us and through us; and mayest thou, O mighty Spirit of the
living God, be praised and glorified for ever and ever. Amen.

Here is said or sung the Veni Creator Spiritus:

Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire,
and lighten with celestial fire,
thou the anointing Spirit art,
who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart.

Thy blesséd unction from above,
is comfort, life, and fire of love,
enable with perpetual light
the dullness of our blinded sight.

Anoint and cheer our soiled face
with the abundance of thy grace.
Keep far our foes, give peace at home;
where thou art Guide, no ill can come.

Teach us to know the Father, Son,
and thee, of both, to be but One;
that through the ages all along,
this may be our endless song:

Praise to thy eternal merit,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

OUR FATHER, who art in heaven; hallowed be thy Name; thy kingdom come;
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou
amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary,
Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Here is said the Proper Prayer for the Day:

FIRST DAY
Come, O Holy Ghost, the Lord and Lifegiver; take up thy dwelling within
our souls, and make of them thy sacred home. Make us live by grace as
adopted children of God. Pervade all the energies of our souls, and
create in us fountains of living water, springing up unto eternal life.

SECOND DAY
Come, O Spirit of Wisdom, and reveal to our souls the mysteries of
heavenly things, their exceeding greatness, and power, and beauty. Teach
us to love them above and beyond all the passing joys and satisfactions
of earth. Show us the way by which we may be able to attain to them,
and possess them, and hold them hereafter, our own forever.

THIRD DAY
Come, O Spirit of Understanding, and enlighten our minds, that we may
know and believe all the mysteries of salvation, and may merit at last
to see the eternal light in thy light; and in the light of glory to have
the clear vision of thee and the Father and the Son.

FOURTH DAY
Come, O Spirit of Counsel, help and guide us in all our ways, that we
may always do thy holy will. Incline our hearts to that which is good,
turn them away from all that is evil, and direct us by the path of thy
commandments to the goal of eternal life.

FIFTH DAY
Come, O Spirit of Fortitude, and give courage to our souls. Make our
hearts strong in all trials and in all distress, pouring forth
abundantly into them the gifts of strength, that we may be able to
resist the attacks of the devil.

SIXTH DAY
Come, O Spirit of Knowledge, and make us to understand and despise the
emptiness and nothingness of the world. Give us grace to use the world
only for thy glory and the salvation of thy creatures. May we always be
faithful in putting thy rewards before every earthly gift.

SEVENTH DAY
Come, O Spirit of Piety, possess our hearts, and incline them to a true
faith in thee, to a holy love of thee, our God. Give us thy grace, that
we may seek thee and find thee, our best and our truest joy.

EIGHTH DAY
Come, O Spirit of holy Fear, penetrate our inmost hearts, that we may
set thee, our Lord and God, before our faces forever; and shun all
things that can offend thee, so that we may be made worthy to appear
before the pure eyes of thy divine Majesty in the heaven of heavens.

NINTH DAY
Come, O Holy Comforter, and grant us a desire for holy things. Produce
in our souls the fruits of virtue, so that, being filled with all
sweetness and joy in the pursuit of good, we may attain unto eternal
blessedness.

The following prayer concludes the Novena each day:

O GOD, who as at this time didst teach the hearts of thy faithful people
by sending to them the light of thy Holy Spirit: grant us by the same
Spirit to have a right judgement in all things, and evermore to rejoice
in His holy comfort; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth
with thee in the unity of the same Holy Spirit ever, one God, world
without end. Amen.

News analysis: "Has the SSPX leadership changed sides?"

What we may be seeing this moment, from some quarters, is an example of a voluntary desire to just look away from what was always there.

Let us go back to April 2006.

At that time, as a comment to an article by the Superior of the French District of the Society of Saint Pius X (FSSPX / SSPX), Father Régis de Cacqueray (The One-Two-Three Strategy, April 4, 2006), Rorate presented the following words on the “doctrinal discussions” (which, more than one year before the motu proprio and almost three years before the lifting of the excommunications, seemed almost impossible):

Some may also believe that “doctrinal discussions” are unacceptable — but that is preposterous. The Holy See has been hopelessly dialoguing, since the Council, with the Anglican Communion, which lost any sign of faith sometime between 1860 and 1960… Honest and topical discussions with the Fraternity would be far more objective, since there is no dogmatic issue involved, and could set the basis for a very useful definition of the “hermeneutics of continuity” proposed by Pope Benedict. Such discussions could also happen after a clearer canonical framework is established, since they are not among the “preconditions”.

Therefore, one could envision a situation whereby the creation of a “Doctrinal Commission” — which would then be the institutional “locus” of the debates between the Fraternity and the Holy See — serves as the fulfilment of this step (“the resolution of doctrinal questions”), allowing for the complete canonical regularization of the Society even though not every controversy is actually resolved before the establishment of the new canonical framework. [Emphasis added]

The One-Two-Three strategy reached its end today, as, after all preconditions were achieved by the SSPX and following the doctrinal discussions, the final matter officially reached the Pope’s desk. Not a single person was deceived in the process – but there is a problem, certainly. The problem is undoubtedly that there were, and remain, some people on both sides, even in high positions (the widows of Vatican II on the liberal side, for one example), who for some reason thought this moment would never come. And now they are appalled that it is here…

Vernet, Roman landscape at sunset

“Today there will be a storm, for the sky is red and lowering. You know then how to discern the face of the sky: and can you not know the signs of the times?” (Mt. xvi, 3)

It is not the Superior General of the Society, and certainly not the Bishop of Rome, who should be blamed if others have difficulty in understanding the nuance that every step of the strategy indicated (though we in Rorate certainly tried to disentangle any misunderstandings and unclear declarations, as our 2006 comment above indicates, trying to understand “the signs of the times“). The resolution of doctrinal questions never meant that Pope Benedict XVI would become the ventriloquist puppet of the Society of Saint Pius X… but rather that some composition on some level would take place at some moment following the fulfillment of the actual two preconditions.

The current product of this doctrinal resolution is what was officially delivered to the Pope today.

Following two years of serious doctrinal discussions, a “Doctrinal Preamble” – the draft of a statement, in plain English – was delivered by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to Bishop Fellay in September 2011. This preamble was duly presented by Fellay to the highest authorities of the Society in an extraordinary meeting in Albano, in the outskirts of Rome, in October 2011 – the group rejected the preamble. After one new draft was presented in December 2011, and some clarifications of the draft in January 2012, the final draft was delivered by Fellay in April 2012.

This final text is evidently an exposition of the doctrinal position of the Society, what they consider to be a reasonable resolution of the matter. It was analysed by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (obviously, since it is the Pope’s advising body for all doctrinal matters) and delivered to the Pope today.

What about the canonical framework? As we said in 2006, it does not matter if every single doctrinal disagreement is solved, what was sought, then as now, was some level of resolution – which simply means that the Pope accepts the doctrinal position of the Society as freely presented by its Superior General, the only authority entitled to speak in the name of the entire Society. It does not mean that the Pope will proclaim the content of the doctrinal statement from the loggia of Saint Peter’s, but that he will present a canonical framework if he finds that the doctrinal statement is a reasonable doctrinal resolution of the matter. A doctrinal resolution, and not an attempt by the parties involved to forcibly enter into a “merely” practical agreement.

All steps were always clear: in 2006 as in 2007, in 2009 as in 2012, “God restoreth that which is past” (cf. Eccles. iii).

Inspiring, energetic of youth at Ottawa March For Life

We put out a lot of coverage of Canada’s National March for Life in Ottawa, but I have to admit it is impossible to convey all the great things that occurred from Thursday evening through to Friday afternoon. It was the most energizing March for Life that most of us had ever experienced in Ottawa.

What was prominent throughout was the overwhelming presence of very enthusiastic youth who added high, positive energy to all the events. Many of them were inspired by the events and they in turn inspired each other and all others who participated or viewed the march activities.

For many of the students who stayed the full time, including attending the giant youth conference on Friday, you could see that it was a life-changing experience. It showed in their demeanor and their exceptional attentiveness by Friday to the incredible talks that they heard.

New pro-life leaders and positive social changers were formed in Ottawa simply by, in many cases, being exposed to awesome truth for the first time and knowing that they were not alone and thousands of others shared this understanding.

The brief video below shows just a tiny bit of what could have been a much longer video of many different scenes on Parliament Hill, during the March, at the evening Rose Dinner and during the Youth conference – all showing the same energy, enthusiasm and pure joy of so many of these youth given an opportunity to be exposed to and act on behalf of something of high ideals. They were challenged with things of great substance, which is not common these days, and gladly responded.

The video
starts with a few clips of youth during the march and ends with a few minutes of what was over an hour of lively singing led by Kathleen Dunn and her group Survived ‘88 after the march on the steps going up to Parliament.

Also, with LifeSiteNews being one the main sponsors of the march, I was given the special opportunity to address the 20,000 strong crowd. When my time came, due to the agenda having gone late, I had to trim my three minute speech on the fly to allow all the remaining speakers their opportunity to greet the crowd. For those who heard the trimmed speech and for any other readers who may be interested, I reproduce the text of the speech below the video.

Thanks to LifeSiteNews Development Manager Jon Fidero, who came up from Virginia, for carrying my 6-foot ladder all over the place as we raced from place to place so I could take high view photos of the activities on Parliament Hill and during the march. (See the 6th from last March photos2 that photographer D’Arcy Grant snapped as we were flying by him). We also owe much thanks to Robert and Sarah Du Broy, D’Arcy Grant and Patrick Craine for the many photos that they also contributed to the two photo journals.
