SOLI Patronal Feast Day Celebration

Thumbnail

A blessed Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary to you all! Today we joyously celebrated our Community’s Patronal Feast. It is always wonderful to spend this day meditating on the tremendous gifts of grace bestowed upon Our Lady, especially her Immaculate Conception, being preserved from Original Sin from the very moment of her existence in the womb of her mother St. Anne, through the merits of the redemption her Divine Son would gain for us all through His life, death and resurrection.

O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee!

We began our Feast with the chanting of Lauds in praise of Our Blessed Lady. The Formation Household traveled over to Cambridge from Glen Morris to join the rest of the Community for the celebration of Holy Mass offered by Father Tim Higgins, at the end of which the sisters all renewed their Total Consecration to Our Lady together, according to the method of St. Louis Marie De Montfort. In the evening we enjoyed a meal together and some lovely singing in honor of our Lady with our dear friends Bishop Matthew Ustrzycki and Father Wayne Lobsinger. May Our Blessed Mother bless each of you with her motherly love and obtain for you and your loved ones the choicest of graces from her Son. Ave Maria!

THE WONDER OF IT ALL!

Today as we celebrate the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Holy Mother of God I am struck by the awesome wonder of it all!

The “all” in this context means the beauty, holiness of this extraordinary woman, to be sure, but also of the exquisite tenderness of Love Himself, this Trinitarian bending towards all of creation, towards every single human being who ever has, who is, who shall ever be gifted with breath of life!

Each of us knows deep within the very core of our being, indeed in every fibre of our being, in soul’s yearning, mind’s seeking, and heart aching the immense impetus to seek to love and be beloved.

That is a most minuet ache, experience, of the infinite of infinite, if I might stretch the statement somewhat, ache, yearning, desire and active will flowing as immense fire of life and love from the Holy Trinity which, because God is love, in a sense compels creation, specifically creation of the human person, hence urges the self-gift of the Second Person of the Holy Trinity to become a man, a human person, in the wonder of the Incarnation, to pour Himself out in the selfless gift of Himself in His Passion, Death, Resurrection, and more to remain with us, nourishing us with love and holiness in the Holy Eucharist and flowing within this river of Trinitarian love-fire-life the Holy Spirit dwells within each of us, constantly setting alive within us the capacity and ability to love and be beloved.

All this Divine design hinges on a simple word from an ordinary yet extraordinary woman, a true woman of the ordinary people, of an ordinary family, a woman betrothed, living in a small village in an occupied country, a woman aware as are countless women on the face of the earth today of life as an oppressed and impoverished people – yes all the splendour of life, of love, of holiness of redemption, of the outpouring of the Holy Trinity hinging on one word, freely spoken, freely willed, freely chosen, love-gift: FIAT!

We accept, as almost so ordinary few reflect on the fact, that the paten and chalice upon which/in which bread and wine are placed to become by the power of the Holy Spirit the Body and Blood of Jesus, the reality of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist communing infinite of love-life-holiness to us, be made of gold, be blessed.

Hence this great solemnity, this creating of she who was to be the Mother of God, the very one who would give to Jesus the body and blood He would pour out for us, given to us as the critical food and drink essential for fullness of life, for our ability to love and be beloved, is as much celebration of the reality of the Immaculate Conception as it is celebration of preparation and purpose, of present and promise: preparation of the living vessel who would contain the One who cannot be contained; purpose of immediate, as it were, unfolding of redemption; in the present moment Mary is with us as icon of discipleship, trusting abandonment to the Holy Will of the Father, of intimate confidence in Jesus and taking up our cross and following Him, of communion of love animated by the Holy Spirit; promise too for in her assumption into heaven is revealed to comfort us the reality of Jesus as resurrection and life offering us too the everlasting embrace of Trinitarian love.

Yep, the wonder of it all!

“Brothers and sisters, rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

- (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

OUR MISSION:

  • Rejoice
  • Pray
  • Give thanks

OUR MISSION IMPOSSIBLE:

  • Rejoice always
  • Pray without ceasing
  • Give thanks in all

What Paul is asking of us here in 1 Thessalonians may well be an impossible mission, however it is in fact our mission, the will of God for us, and so we must try.

Can we rejoice always, in every circumstance, knowing that God is GOOD! Always!? This request feels most impossible because when I look at Jesus on the cross I do not see Him rejoicing, I do not see Mary His Mother “glad” and “delighted” that her Son has been beaten and murdered. Yet both Jesus and Mary must have had the most incredible joy in their hearts to submit their human wills to such suffering. Really their willful suffering reveals their great joy in the Lord, for His Goodness, as revealed to them, must have been magnificent enough to be worth even the greatest human suffering. A mystery indeed. Whatever is happening with us or to us, whatever pain we are facing, hope must win over our hearts as we trust in the Lord’s promises in order to endure and therefore rejoice in His Almighty and Loving Will! Always!

“And Mary said, ‘My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour…’” - (Luke 1:46&47)

Next we are told to pray without ceasing. When I read this I think of monks in silence or chanting all day and all night. But really we can’t all be called to that life as many of us have careers, spouses, children, we can’t be still and just say prayers all day. So what’s with this impossible mission?

It is easy enough to start your day in prayer, talking to God, asking Him to be with you that day, etc. and then off you go about your business, you and God, together. However, at some point, in some way, we get caught up in ourselves and the tasks we are doing and eventually, usually when something goes wrong, we realise we got way ahead of Him.

To pray without ceasing for me means to slow down and back up frequently, as many times a day as necessary, in order to try not to act without God. As humans in this busy world we will find ourselves out of sync with God many times but if we can make it a habit throughout our day to stop, consider God, and then continue on again in communion with Him, then we have accepted the mission of praying without ceasing. Yes, for now our mission remains impossible, only in heaven will we be completely freed from our selfishness and be forever in complete union with God, yet the request remains and we must make every effort, even now, to pray without ceasing.

“He said, ‘I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, “Make straight the way of the Lord”’ as the Prophet Isaiah said.” - (John 1:23)

Lastly, we are asked to give thanks in all. Thanks in all? Thanks in a flat tire? Thanks in children? Thanks in losing a job? Again, really? How can we be asked to give thanks in these things? Thanks for what? Thanks for Jesus, that’s what! Thanks for the Saviour of the world who has already conquered evil and so brings good out of bad. We don’t have to experience all these things for nothing, we can give thanks in all because we know that God is at work in all!

“The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” - (Isaiah 61:1-2)

So yes, our mission is indeed impossible, but it remains our mission, and God will grant us the gifts we need to continue it. The gift of FAITH is needed to give thanks in all, it will take supernatural HOPE in order to rejoice always, and of course LOVE of God will be our reason to pray without ceasing.

“May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this.” - (1 Thessalonians 5:23&24)

Dec. 8 | St. Ambrose

I completely missed yesterday’s marking of the feast of Saint Ambrose, one of the most important saints in the western church. But, I’m glad to report and link to an article which shows that others did not forget. Saint Ambrose, as you may know, baptized Augustine and was key to Augustine’s conversion to the Christian faith. He was bishop of Milan (elected to that post) from 374 – 397 and is regarded as one of the most important Fathers of the Church.

Two things about the linked article above – note that it appears in a Catholic newspaper, the UK’s Catholic Herald. Catholic media are an ongoing source of vital information and reflection for the church at a time when other media sources, most of which are tone deaf to Christianity, can easily marginalize Catholic thought and opinion without even trying very hard.

The other thing: the Herald writer notes is Ambrose’s love for silent reading. I’m thinking: Christamas holiday activity, if I’m lucky…

Advent Charity: Holy Innocents Center, Kingston, Jamaica

If you are looking for a place to be charitable this Advent, think of helping the

Missionaries of the Poor

. Especially pray for their ‘mother and child’ project – the Holy Innocents Center in Kingston, Jamaica.

Jamaica has been struggling against world pressure to legalize abortion, and the M.O.P. have a very practical solution- care for mothers and babies.

Our family has chosen this particular charity for our Advent sacrifice. Myself, my sons Mark and Paul, and one of their friends, will be praying and running in the Cayman Marathon Relay on Sunday (Dec.4), as the ‘Webster Rundown’ team. Each leg is approx. 6.5 mi., and we are hoping to come in under 4 hrs.
Please pray with us (race starts 5am EST ) and , if inspired, donate to M.O.P. (scroll to bottom of link page.)

UPDATE : Our team ran the Cayman Marathon in 4:21, and I have been told that some funds were raised for M.O.P.!

A group that regularly prays, runs and raises money for life, is LifeRunners . Check them out for an event near you.

Happy Advent!

prayer request for mother

Please keep my mom (LIZ TRIGILIO) in prayer. ; I took her to Lourdes in November, 2008. ; She has been in the hospital since last Wednesday when her blood pressure became dangerously high (severe acute hypertension). ; She also needs operations on her heart and on her back (lower spine) once she is well enough for surgery. ; Mom will be 78 next February. A widow since 1998, my mother buried three of her four children before my dad died. Both of them took exemplary care of my brother Michael during his short life of 26 years battling Muscular Dystrophy followed by my father’s battle with leukemia. He died six months after my younger brother Joseph was killed by an underage drunk driver who never spent one day in jail nor one dime in fines.

Thanksgiving was a very quiet day as she was too weak and too ill to leave the house or even to get out of bed. ; Deo volente, she will be discharged before this weekend and be on the road to recovery soon. ; The Discalced Cloistered Carmelites in Erie need her as she is sort of an extern in that she helps out as one of the sacristans and as a gal-Friday doing shopping and driving the nuns to doctor appointments now and then. My brother Mark and I appreciate your kindness in offering any prayers you can for our dear and beloved mother. Being 300+ miles away (from my parish to her home) makes it difficult but the Good Lord and His Holy Mother have blessed us with the help of some very good friends and family members.

Funny Things Kids Have Said

LOT ‘S WIFE

The Sunday School teacher was describing how Lot’s wife looked back and turned into a pillar of salt, when little Jason interrupted, “My Mother looked back once while she was driving,” he announced triumphantly, “and she turned into a telephone pole!”

GOOD SAMARITAN

A Sunday school teacher was telling her class the story of the Good Samaritan. She asked the class, “If you saw a person lying on the roadside, all wounded and bleeding, what would you do?”

A thoughtful little girl broke the hushed silence, “I think I’d throw up.”

DID NOAH FISH?

A Sunday school teacher asked, “Johnny, do you think Noah did a lot of fishing when he was on the Ark?”

“No,” replied Johnny. “How could he, with just two worms.”

HIGHER POWER

A Sunday school teacher said to her children, “We have been learning how powerful Kings and Queens were in Bible times. But, there is a Higher Power. Can anybody tell me what it is?”

One child blurted out, “Aces!”

MOSES AND THE RED SEA

Nine-year-old Joey was asked by his mother what he had learned in Sunday School.

“Well, Mum, our teacher told us how God sent Moses behind enemy lines on a rescue mission to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. When he got to the Red Sea, he had his army build a pontoon bridge and all the people walked across safely. Then he radioed headquarters for reinforcements. They sent bombers to blow up the bridge and all the Israelites were saved.”

“Now, Joey, is that really what your teacher taught you?” his Mother asked.

“Well, no, Mum, but, if I told it the way the teacher did, you’d never believe it!”

THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD

A Sunday School teacher decided to have her young class memorize one of the most quoted passages in the Bible – Psalm 23. She gave the youngsters a month to learn the chapter.

Little Rick was excited about the task – but he just couldn’t remember the Psalm. After much practice, he could barely get past the first line.

On the day that the kids were scheduled to recite Psalm 23 in front of the congregation, Ricky was so nervous. When it was his turn, he stepped up to the microphone and said proudly, “The Lord is my Shepherd, and that’s all I need to know.

“O God, who by the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, did prepare a worthy dwelling place for Your Son, we beseech You that, as by the forseen death of this, Your Son, You did preserve Her from all stain, so too You would permit us, purified by Her intercession, to come unto You.

Catechesis: Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Hello Everyone,

I couldn’t let another feast day go by without giving you a little edu-ma-cation. Without further-ado, Catechesis on the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I highly advise you to read this before you go to Mass, unless other factors prevent you otherwize:

When? Usually the 2nd Week of Advent, December the 8th annually in both the NO and the EF calendars.

Whom? Mary Blessed Mother of Jesus, St. Anne (Mary’s Mother who birthed her), and St. Joachim, Mary’s father.

What?

Here’s what the Catechism of the Church says on the matter.

The Immaculate Conception

490 To become the mother of the Saviour, Mary “was enriched by God with gifts appropriate to such a role.”132 The angel Gabriel at the moment of the annunciation salutes her as “full of grace”.133 In fact, in order for Mary to be able to give the free assent of her faith to the announcement of her vocation, it was necessary that she be wholly borne by God’s grace.

491 Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, “full of grace” through God,134 was redeemed from the moment of her conception. That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Pope Pius IX proclaimed in 1854:

The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Saviour of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin.135

492 The “splendour of an entirely unique holiness” by which Mary is “enriched from the first instant of her conception” comes wholly from Christ: she is “redeemed, in a more exalted fashion, by reason of the merits of her Son”.136 The Father blessed Mary more than any other created person “in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places” and chose her “in Christ before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless before him in love”.137

493 The Fathers of the Eastern tradition call the Mother of God “the All-Holy” (Panagia), and celebrate her as “free from any stain of sin, as though fashioned by the Holy Spirit and formed as a new creature”.138 By the grace of God Mary remained free of every personal sin her whole life long.
“Let it be done to me according to your word. . .”

494 At the announcement that she would give birth to “the Son of the Most High” without knowing man, by the power of the Holy Spirit, Mary responded with the obedience of faith, certain that “with God nothing will be impossible”: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be [done] to me according to your word.”139 Thus, giving her consent to God’s word, Mary becomes the mother of Jesus. Espousing the divine will for salvation wholeheartedly, without a single sin to restrain her, she gave herself entirely to the person and to the work of her Son; she did so in order to serve the mystery of redemption with him and dependent on him, by God’s grace:140

As St. Irenaeus says, “Being obedient she became the cause of salvation for herself and for the whole human race.”141 Hence not a few of the early Fathers gladly assert. . .: “The knot of Eve’s disobedience was untied by Mary’s obedience: what the virgin Eve bound through her disbelief, Mary loosened by her faith.”142 Comparing her with Eve, they call Mary “the Mother of the living” and frequently claim: “Death through Eve, life through Mary.”143 (1)

That’s a lot eh? Maybe a shorter, better explanation will be more suitable for you. Here’s the introduction taken from the variable prayers and passages that fit the Extraordinary Form mass of that day in the 1962 Roman Missal for the Laity:

“ I will put enmities between thee and the woman.” In these words the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary was announced to the first parents. It was to be the reversal of the friendship with the serpent contracted by Eve, when she listened to his voice and fell under his power. The second Eve was never to be under the power of the devil; the enmity between them was to admit of no possible exception. This involved the grace of being conceived immaculate. Mary’s Immaculate Conception was the foundation of all her graces. The absence of any stain or spot of sin distinguished her from all the rest of mankind. It distinguished her from holiest of the Saints, since they, one and all, were sinners. Her perfect sinlessness was the source of all her glory and all her majesty; it was this which opened the door to the unlimited graces that she received from God; it was this that qualified her for her divine maternity and raised her to her throne as Queen of heaven. “O Queen, conceive without original sin, pray for us, who have recourse to thee.” “(2)

Key Points And Notes on the Matter

Key Points
1. THIS IS ONE OF THE TWO OCCASIONS IN THE CHURCH’s HISTORY THAT THE CHURCH HAS USED ITS INFALLIBILITY EX CATHEDRA IN A MATTER OF DOGMA!!!!!
http://www.papalencyclicals.net/Pius09/p9ineff.htmIneffabilis Deus, Pope Pius IX on Dec 8, 1854.

The only other instance of ex cathedra use of the power of infallibility is for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. However, this ex Cathedra announcement means a binding consequence amongst Roman Catholics: This is dogma pronounced publically and therefore MUST BE OBEYED by all practicing Catholics. To publically dissent from this means you are NOT Catholic and can get you excommunicated via apostasy (giving up the Christian Faith) though it could possibly be heresy (beliefs contrary to dogma of the faith, though usually clergy or high level people get this title), that is if you want to go about things rashly and proclaim denial to everyone and anyone you meet. Sure there are Catholics who don’t believe this and you probably know them, but hopefully they keep this to themselves and don’t try to encourage others to dis-believe. But if clergy do not believe this, you have every right as a Catholic by canon law to report this up the chain of command.

DISCLAIMER: If someone does not believe in the immaculate conception, do keep in mind that a number of Catholics today are poorly educated by the developed world’s current cathechesis programs, youth ministries, RCIA programs etc. Most parishes outside of RCIA for converts do not focus on any form of Catholic faith education past Confirmation age. If any education is granted it is usually through a separate/Catholic publically (a.k.a. secular government) funded system which can interdict its authority into what is taught, and rarely will a high schooler get a decent chance at Catholic education via private Catholic school. Do be wary of this and try to get to the bottom of the persons disbelief first before tightening your grip alright?

2. IN CANADA, This is unfortunately not a holy day of obligation. However, as always the Catechism says …

2177 The Sunday celebration of the Lord’s Day and his Eucharist is at the heart of the Church’s life. “Sunday is the day on which the paschal mystery is celebrated in light of the apostolic tradition and is to be observed as the foremost holy day of obligation in the universal Church.”110

“Also to be observed are the day of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Epiphany, the Ascension of Christ, the feast of the Body and Blood of Christi, the feast of Mary the Mother of God, her Immaculate Conception, her Assumption, the feast of Saint Joseph, the feast of the Apostles Saints Peter and Paul, and the feast of All Saints.”111 (3)

3. I would consider this the most important point to tell people today: Many people think that this day refers to Jesus being conceived without original sin. THIS IS WRONG. This day refers to Mary being conceived into the world without original sin so as to be an appropriate vessel to birth our God as the Word Made Flesh, as Jesus.

So, as a final note, I encourage everyone to attend Mass today if they can do it. While in many countries it is not a day of obligation (thanks to their Bishop’s Conferences) do go to a Mass today. It will be that more spiritually rewarding to the Lord as you are going on your own free will and not cause an authority dictated you to go. EF parishes everywhere (and lay associations that set up EFs) will always have some mass on a feast day. As for Novus Ordos, some will likely have an evening Mass after work to go to. Worst case scenario, try to get to the morning mass, especially if its before work (if you can make it, and usually weekday NO’s are shorter than Sunday. That or priests tend not to “pull out all the stops” as it were on the weekdays”).
