Marie Reine du Canada Pilgrimage Part 3: One Very Special Moment

Glory to Jesus Christ!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In the previous two posts I discussed briefly the spiritual benefits and graces of pilgrimage, and the significance of the location of the Marie Reine du Canada pilgrimage (Quebec). Now I wish to relay one story. This is the story of a moment which struck many of us on the pilgrimage, and more than one of us said that this one moment made the whol pilgrimage worth the effort.

It was the final leg of our walk, the last 5 or 6 kilometers or so. We had already passed through downtown Trois-Rivieres where we stopped for lunch, and we were getting excited since our destination was near. We were walking through some neighbourhood streets and approaching a corner where we would turn left. From afar, I could see that on that corner stood an elderly lady.

I was very interested to see her reaction once she noticed what we were doing. As we approached, her eyes lit up. She saw the statue of the Mother of God at the front. She saw the banners of Catholic New France, the St. Jean Baptiste Society, and of the Marie Reine du Canada pilgrimage. She heard us singing the rosary in French. She looked like she was about to cry. Maybe she did begin to cry once the last of the several dozen young people passed by her. As we passed, she clapped in approval, and we greeted her.

This woman was of the last generation of Catholic Quebec. Her children would have been of the generation which turned from the faith and towards the new anti-clerical Quebecois nationalism. Her grandchildren would be of the generation which is increasingly asking who that guy on the cross is. I can only imagine the trauma she suffered when her entire world collapsed around her. I can only imagine how much she suffers to see her children and grandchildren so far from Christ and His salvation.

At that moment, all of this went through my mind and I attempted to place myself into her shoes. If nothing else, perhaps we showed her that there is hope. After experiencing what she experienced, seeing 70 or so young people praying and walking must have been very encouraging.

For us who were walking, we realized that we had touched someone very deeply that moment. We have no idea how many others were touched that weekend by our presence, but we know that there was at least that one elderly lady.

Moments such as this help us realize why we do the pilgrimage. We do it for our own spiritual benefit, but others need us too. Thousands of people saw us that weekend providing a witness for our Christian faith. Who knows how many were moved in their heart by the Holy Spirit.

FrancisCorps beginnings

So, I haven’t really fallen off the face of the earth, no worries. It’s just been kind of busy with the transition saying goodbye to my friars, friends, co-workers and parishioners in Toronto and then saying hello to my new home and ministry in Syracuse, New York. There’s lots to say for sure.

At the moment I’m in Costa Rica with our new volunteers who will begin their volunteer work on Monday. I return home tomorrow. I promise to write more. In the meantime I want to share a video that was sent to me by Carolyn, one of the Costa Rica volunteers. We were at the Cathedral in San José today and looking a beautiful window of the story of the woman at the well, mentioned that it was one of my favourite Gospel passages. Carolyn then mentioned this rap that I’ve attached.  This “spoken word” captures everything that I like about that passage in the scripture.

If I can live this in my ministry I will be a very happy man, and blessed friar and a good priest.
